Stop Throwing Out the Dishes

Nobody likes doing the dishes.

Picture skipping them for a week. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner pile up. The sink overflows, the fruit flies move in, and you run out of forks. By the time you deal with it, the crud has set so hard that some pans are ruined. Part of you just wants to throw everything out and buy new stuff. And you know the whole mess could have been avoided by washing them every day.

That's exactly what happens when we start a new workout routine or a new way of eating. We start out motivated. Then we miss a workout or eat a pint of ice cream, and instead of washing that one dish, we throw the whole set out. We quit, wait until after the holidays, and "start over."

Missing a day is fine. One bad meal is fine. Starting over is the problem. It tells us we weren't ready yet, so we learn nothing and expect the next attempt to be perfect. We toss out coaches, programs, and good advice because we refuse to take the L.

Here's the truth: nobody wants to wake up at 5 am to train, go to bed early, or eat green things. In the moment, I want to hit snooze and eat pizza too. What I love is the long-term result. I know today's boring work pays off later, not right now.

Fear can get you started, but it can't keep you going. Confidence can. When you trust yourself to handle something hard, you expect the roadblocks. You accept that mistakes are part of the process, and starting over stops being an option.

You don't need a fresh start. You're ready, and you can keep going right now.

Just wash the dish.
