"I Couldn't Walk After My Workout"

It's not the flex you think it is.

You finish a workout. You can barely sit down on the toilet the next day. You tell everyone about it like it's a badge of honor. Here's the problem, unless this happens rarely, that badge might actually be a red flag.

What Soreness Actually Is:

That deep, days-long ache is delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. It shows up from microscopic tears in muscle fibers, usually after movement your body isn't adapted to yet. New exercise or more volume than usual. Your body responds with inflammation while it rebuilds the tissue stronger than before.

That rebuilding process is the actual goal of training. The soreness is just a side effect of it, not a measurement of it.

More Soreness Doesn't Mean More Growth.

Studies looking at muscle growth consistently show that soreness and muscle growth are only loosely connected. You can build serious strength and size from sessions that leave you mildly fatigued, not flattened. Soreness tells you something was unfamiliar. It does not tell you that something worked.

The Real Cost: Time

If you're sore for four or five days, you're not training that muscle group again for four or five days. Your next session gets pushed, your volume for the week drops, and your overall training stimulus over the month goes down, not up.

Progress isn't built in one brutal session. A well-built session should challenge you. You should feel it the next day but not be negotiating with stairs. The standard to aim for: muscle fatigue, some mild soreness, full range of motion, and the ability to train hard again within 48 to 72 hours.

Soreness is a byproduct, not a goal. If your workouts are leaving you wrecked for the better part of a week, you're not training harder. You're training less, just spread out over more days of regret.
